New York City for Dummies, 2nd Edition
Published in Paperback by For Dummies (15 October, 2002)
Average review score:

Great for the Basics! This book was very helpful. Clear explanations about how to get around New York from taking a taxi from the airport to taking the subway. The maps are the strong point of the book. Each chapter describes either hotels or major sites or shopping or museums and comes with very clear maps with all locations marked. I ripped out those pages and took them with me. Some interesting out of the way spots (like art galleries, nightclubs, etc.) are described but the book isn't great for that. My only criticism is really more of a warning about the hotel that I stayed in Greenwich Village. The Incentra is a gay hotel and straight visitors may not be treated as well as gay ones. Whatever you do, do not agree to stay in the "Garden Room," it's a creepy basement and the only thing that grows there is the mold on the walls.

New York Walks: The 92nd Street Y (Henry Holt Walks Series)
Published in Paperback by Henry Holt (Paper) (July, 1992)
Average review score:

Great funGet this if you already live in NYC or intend to visit, you will not be disappointed. I loved the detailed info on the architecture of the Woolworth building and the history behind the folks in buried in Trinity Cemetary. I enjoyed the facts of who used to live in what buildings in the Village. When covering the 5-Points Section, what is now the Federal &State Courts area & Chinatown, was absolutlely fun trying to hunt down these old sites still visible for myself. All the info on the history of some of the street names was curious such as Mott, Pell, Bayard & Baxter streets were named after the butchers in the area when that area was a stinking mess. The lore surrounding Wahington Square Park, especially the "Hanging Tree" was fascinating. I'm still trying to figure out which tree it is! All the semi-hidden small cemetaries mentioned in Manhattan is worth a look; knowing that these still exist especially when the real estate here is so astronimical in price. I hope people make good use of this guide when showing off the City to visitors & I'm sure tourists will get a kick out of an insiders tour of NYC.

New York's 50 Best Wonderful Little Hotels
Published in Paperback by City & Co (October, 1997)
Average review score:

I live in Manhattan and find this book indispensableI hope they keep updating this little gem I discovered one day at a local bookseller. I was looking for a spectacular way to make my new wife's birthday special, and this handy guide provided me with ALL the answers. I live in Manhattan and find its hotels to make up an important part of its eclectic culture. Sperry has pointed me to some wonderful small (and not so small) hotels that I've walked by a dozen times and never knew existed. A real treat . . . highly recommended.

NYC for Free
Published in Paperback by Tatra Pr (April, 1998)
Average review score:

Great guide to the city!I love this book because it reminds me that there are hundreds of hidden gems in New York. And they don't have to cost you a cent -- the point is to get yourself out the door and exploring. Thanks to the author for doing an incredible amount of legwork. The only thing I can think of as a drawback is that some of the information is bound to change over time so just make sure you call ahead to check on times and other details. Great job!
